Homeliness, hedonism, hunger
August 1st , 2022“Stolen Moments”, Kim Addonizio
And we still had hours.
I came across a bit by Herman Hesse from Steppenwolf, which I don’t know the meaning of, but here it is:
A savage desire for strong emotions and sensations burns inside me: a rage against this soft-tinted, shallow, standardized and sterilized life, and a mad craving to smash something up, a department store, say, or a cathedral, or myself.
It’s nice. Intensity. Yes.
This has rather disturbing imagery, but I like this idea of nakedness, moreso the ability to be that naked around someone. Which, actually, reminds me in spirit of Ada Limon’s “Love Poem With Apologies For My Appearance”. A lot of Kim Addonizio today, and in general, I suppose. I heard Ada Limon was named poet laureate of the US the other day, and that made me awfully happy.
“All My Friends Are Finding New Beliefs”, Christian Wiman
I’m just going to leave this one here. It was present in mind, having seen my religious relatives and attended church with them yesterday.
How lovely. Here, I realize that today’s theme is shaping up rather clearly.
“For Those Who Do Not Dream”, Timothy Liu
Really reinforcing, lol. Rather erotic. But I love this theme of hunger and how it’s considered in many writings that I will not, cannot link here. My initial reaction to this, sheeeeeesh. Which also reminds me of this other poem he has, “The Lovers”, which I’ve been seeing on the NYC subway as a part of their poetry in motion campaign, which I love.
Life is hard. But somtimes not. From Tara Skurtu’s instagram. This was a nice day of poems. If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is! Thanks, Kurt.
As an afterthought tacked on to this theme of hunger, here’s a poem I wrote with Eve some days later: “Self-Portrait as a Sarlacc”. Cavernous.
